Destination Decarbonisation

On 16 December 2014, Lund University organised a closing event for Prof. Harriet Bulkeley (from Durham University and a member of the GUST team) to celebrate the Kings Professorship in Environmental Science. The problem of mitigating climate change is predominantly treated as a matter of pollution control - one of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in particular sectors and under designated areas of jurisdiction at the “end-of-pipe”. This view of the climate problem is giving way to one that recognises that more fundamental transformation is required.

This shift in perspective has profound implications for the kind of social science required to understand and contribute to addressing climate change. Entitled “Destination Decarbonisation” the event involved presentations by Prof. Harriet Bulkeley on the geographies of decarbonisation, Prof. Annica Kronsell (member of the GUST team) on decarbonisation and the green state, and Kes McCormick (project coordinator for GUST) on decarbonisation and urban living labs.
